About Claire Coolen
Biography

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Claire Coolen completed her Bachelor and Master’s of Music in vocal performance in New York City at Manhattan School of Music. Winner of several prizes, including the Grand Prix at the Byulbyul International Vocalists Competition in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2024, and the International competition “Cappuccilli-Patané-Respighi”, along with the audience prize, in Alessandria, Italy, in 2018. She has been praised by the critics for her “gorgeous voice with impressive control, “crystalline voice” and “powerful stage presence”. She sang the role of Gilda in Rigoletto with critical acclaim in Tampa, Florida, and in Viterbo, Grosseto, Castelfiorentino, and Perugia, Italy. She performed Liù in Turandot with the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago. With the National Theatre in Belgrade, Serbia, she sang Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La Traviata and Mimì in La Bohème. In 2023 she made her debut in China, singing Violetta in La Traviata at Shaanxi Grand Opera Theatre, in Xi’an, China.
She will be returning to China, at Shanghai Opera House, to debut Zerlina in Don Giovanni, in November 2024. Other notable roles throughout North America and Europe: Marie in La fille du Régiment, Susanna in Nozze di Figaro, Soeur Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites, Musetta in La Bohème, Pamina and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, Dorinda in Orlando, and the Governess in Turn of the Screw, for which she received the Royal Bank of Canada Award in Excellence.
For contemporary Operas, Hannah in Martin Bresnik’s My Friends Story and Mrs. Winemiller in Lee Hoiby’s first ever recording of Summer and Smoke, which was one of Opera News 2011 CD’s of the year.
Symphony works include Beethovens 9th Symphony.She has appeared on radio shows, WQXR in New York City, and Rai 3, La barcaccia, with Renata Scotto, in Rome, Italy. She stared as Musetta in the motion picture “The Bohemians”, under the leadership of director Jose Luis Cortes and producer Álvaro Domingo.
Claire is currently based in Milan, Italy.
