About Margarita Gritskova
Biography
"She possesses a magnificent, darkly colored mezzo-soprano, a flawless vocal technique, and a captivatingly fiery stage presence." Hannu-Ilari Lampila for "Helsingin sanomat", 02.02.2025
With a powerful dark coloured voice with a brilliant and confident upper register and fabulous technique, mezzo-soprano Margarita Gritskova brings fire, elegance, and charisma to every stage she steps onto.
Gritskova appears regularly at major opera houses around the world, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and opera houses in Quebec, Monterrey, Covent Garden, Oslo, Zurich, Melbourne, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Helsinki, and Tokyo Opera City.
In the 2022 yearbook of Opernwelt, she was named “Singer of the Year” for her acclaimed performance as Amneris.
An award-winning artist early in her career, she received top prizes at prestigious competitions including the Luciano Pavarotti International Singing Competition in Modena and the Villa de Colmenar International Singing Competition in Spain, she was the finalist of “Operalia” competition in 2010.
She has since performed at renowned festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Opera Festival Tenerife, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Immling Festival, and the Lech Classic Festival.
From 2012 to 2020, she was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, where she quickly became an audience favorite. During her time there, she performed leading roles in the Mozart and Rossini repertoire, including Cherubino, Idamante, Annio, Sesto, Dorabella, Bradamante, Rosina, Angelina, Isabella, and Olga in Eugene Onegin.
Beyond the classics, Margarita has also taken on more modern and rarely heard works. She created the role of Krista in a new production of The Makropulos Case (directed by Peter Stein), portrayed Masha in Peter Eötvös’ haunting Three Sisters, and sang Anna in Berlioz’s monumental Les Troyens. Composer Peter Eötvös was so inspired by her performance that he dedicated his romance Bitternis to her — a setting of a poem by Marina Tsvetaeva.
She represented the Vienna State Opera on tour, singing Cherubino in Japan under Riccardo Muti and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival under Alain Altinoglu. In 2018, she returned to the Vienna State Opera to sing her first Carmen alongside Piotr Beczala as Don José.
In recent seasons, Margarita has stepped into the dramatic mezzo repertoire. She debuted as Amneris in Aida in Weimar, as Johanna Seymour in Anna Bolena (Munich), Rosina at the Bolshoi Theatre (under Tugan Sokhiev), Preziosilla in La forza del destino (Klosterneuburg), and Adalgisa at the Gut Immling Festival.
In 2023, she triumphed in her debut as Eboli in Don Carlo at the Klosterneuburg Festival, a role she reprised there in 2024 alongside Adalgisa in Norma. She debuted as Eboli at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki in 2025.
In addition to her operatic achievements, she has also taken part in concerts and recitals, such as the farewell concert for José Carreras at Carnegie Hall in New York City in September 2017.
Born in Sankt-Petersburg, Gritskova lives in Vienna, Austria.
